The Maine Bureau of Insurance has directed its licensing examination vendor, Pearson VUE, to cease administering online-proctored insurance licensing examinations for Maine.

The option of an online insurance examination for certain authorities was initially permitted in response to the COVID public health emergency, which has ended. After a review of security risks with online-proctored licensing examinations in uncontrolled environments, we have made the decision to stop offering licensing examinations via this method.  Over the past year, many other state insurance regulators have ended the online testing option due to similar concerns.

Effective today, no new registrations will be accepted for online insurance examinations. In addition:

  • Candidates who have already registered for an online examination will be permitted to take the examination if the examination is scheduled to be administered on or prior to May 16, 2025.
  • Any other insurance examination which has been scheduled to be taken online must instead be rescheduled and taken in person at one of the authorized Pearson VUE testing centers. There will be no additional charge for the rescheduled examination.
  • Any applicant who may need an accommodation for an examination should review the procedures found on the Pearson VUE website.
  • Pearson VUE contact information

Anyone with questions should contact Tracy Cunningham, Licensing Division Supervisor, at (207) 624-8436 or tracy.a.cunningham@maine.gov.
